Sheng-chung Wu is a worthy successor of the Russian School, with rock-solid techniques and deep, sonorous velvet tones.

    Pianist Sheng-chung Wu was born to a family of music lovers in Hong Kong.studied Mathematics and Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he received training from the eminent pianist Raymond Young.  Upon graduation, Wu travelled to Moscow and entered the Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, specialized in piano performance.  After finishing the 5-year Basic Course, he was admitted by the post-graduate school of the Conservatoire to study two post-graduate programmes: piano performance and chamber ensemble.  Wu is the first musician from Hong Kong and Macao region to obtain a doctoral degree from the institution.  In his student years Wu got numerous prizes in international piano competitions in Russia and Europe, and started giving concerts regularly in Russia, Poland, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Macau.

    Since returning to his home country, Wu has been active in concertizing, pedagogical and charity activities, promoting music, arts and culture.  Wu currently teaches at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Education University of Hong Kong, he is also a visiting professor at various universities in China, such as Huizhou University, Jinzhong Teachers College and Xinzhou Teachers University.

    Wu frequently sits on the jury in various music competitions, including the Sino-Korean International Exchange Music Competition Hong Kong – Asia Piano Open Competition, Macau – Asia Piano Open Competition, Hong Kong Children and Youth Piano Competition, Hong Kong International Piano Open Competition (Chopin and Liszt Memorial Prizes), he was the Jury Chairman in the Preliminary Competitions of Chopin and Liszt Memorial Prizes in Beijing, West Guangdong and Huizhou regions.

    Besides piano performance and pedagogy, Wu also has a passion for orchestral conducting. In 2018 he established the Jeunehomme Chamber Orchestra, since then the orchestra gives performances regularly. The repertoire includes orchestral works by Bach, Mozart, also piano concertos by Mozart and Chopin.

Recent Performances:

    In July 2011, Wu was presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in “Our Music Talents” Series with an all-Liszt recital “Franz Liszt and the Age of Romanticism” in the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall, as an event in the Liszt & Mahler Year to commemorate the bi-centenary of the birth of Franz Liszt.

   In October 2011, Wu gave a recital “Revolution and Romanticism” in the Loke Yew Hall of the Hong Kong University to commemorate the centenary of the Hsin-hai Revolution of 1911.

    In September 2012, Wu was invited by the eminent Chinese conductor Mak Ka Lok to perform Tchaikovsky’s First Piano concerto.

    In October 2012 - tour to Korea, Wu was invited to give a recital in the 32nd Tongyeong Art Festival, and then to give recital and masterclass at the Dong-eui University in Busan.

   In April 2013, Wu was invited by the Jinan University in Guangzhou to give a recital and masterclass.

    In November 2013, Wu was invited by the Jinzhong Teachers University and the Xinzhou Teachers University to give recitals, masterclasses and a lecture “An Introduction to the Russian Piano School – History, Tradition and Spirit”.

    In June 2015, Wu was invited by the Huizhou Culture and Arts Centre to hold charity activities such as lecture “Aesthetics and Basic Principles of the Russian Piano School” and masterclasses, as part of the series “Huizhou Grand Culture Lectures 2015”.
